Logo 2nd round

Sorry to bore my other reader with all this, but the pain could soon be all over as I think we may have a winner...

My vote(and Tim's) goes with the idea put forward by Tony B, I think it works rather well (the one immediately above).

How good would that look on a mug as a T-shirt (ha ha!)

The battle lines are being drawn

Wanstead Parklands tweeted this picture today with the triumphal message: "Sterling work in Wanstead Park by Epping Forest Conservation Volunteers - clearance revealed bluebells"

My tweet from the previous day was slightly at odds with this great achievement: "Looks like the friends of Wanstead Park will get their way with or without the consultation. More needless trashing of the best habitats"

I can see we will be disagreeing on a lot of things. One has to ask what is the purpose of this? To find yet more bluebells?

I can see some reason for clearing the SSSI of invasive scrub, but this particular little copse has not invaded anything and to my recollection this is not SSSI.  Is it to bring back Skylark, which left the park some years ago because of disturbance? Or so the enlightened visitor the park can enjoy the really ugly back-end of a building put up by some rich twat years ago before he lost all of his money being a twat? Or just wanton vandalism?

I am sure if you cut down all of the trees you'd find one or two bluebells, but carry on hacking the marginal habitat you wont find many birds...

Logo loggerheads

Tim thinks we need a logo, and if it's free why not. Just think of all the merchandising, kerching! Or perhaps not. Anyhow, the admirable Mr Tony Morrison has come up with a few initial thoughts which I find quite attractive...

I tried several times to send them out to my colleagues with a varying amount of success, eventually.

Mr L responded: "I can't see them. Is it a skylark being eaten by a dog? If so gets my vote."

Mr Brown was more constructive: "I agree, the Wanstead Birders do need a logo - however I’m personally not feeling the love for the Ideas provided, I would have liked to have seen a logo in which it better represented the site/birds. I've given this some thought in the past and although i’m no designer/creative I did come up with an idea.

In regards to having a bird for the logo then Wanstead’s most iconic bird has to be the Skylark, i then thought about what might else best represent Wanstead - barrage balloon ties!

I agree with Tony that it would have to be our iconic bird (but how about a Wheatear?), but have to say I do like these first drafts, I reproduce them here so that those Wanstead Birders not on my email list can have a look-see and an input. Jono agreed with Skylark... ... as long as it was dead and in the mouth of a Springer Spaniel.

Stasis: February round-up

 
This has been the worst start to the year that I can recall: four less than both 2014 and 2013, and five less than 2012, and probably even worse against 2011.  February's only saving grace is that it is now over and Wheatear are going to be back this month.

I now have the arduous job of trying to make something purse and silky-like out of a real pig's ear of a month, that we call our highlights

• Stuart didn't let us down with regular Firecrest sightings at Snaresbrook, a Treecreeper and at the month's end the third Buzzard
• Marco chipped in with the only Little Egret of the year, and probably the only time they'll make the highlights of this or any other year
• Josh notched up the second Woodcock of the month near Bush Wood with a regular bird being seen at dusk going to play a few holes of golf
• An early Lapwing on the third promised a good month, but lied
• And there was some other stuff...
• ... no there wasn't

Pretty dire stuff and consequently by the end of the month none of us could be arsed to make the effort either.  Where is everything: Hardly any wintering birds (few Redwing, fewer Fieldfare), no over-wintering Chiffchaff, or Firecrest (in Bush Wood), no interesting ducks and not even a Med Gull to liven up the tedium.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel, I note that this is the first year Little Grebe have over-wintered on Alex (how exciting is that?) and what is going on down on Heronry with an adult Great Crested Grebe and a first winter bird displaying to each other?  There goes the neighbourhood.

I am going away now to cry and think about Wheatear
